My Valentines...

I hope you all had a nice Valentines Day. Hubby and I spend our two days off together faithfully, and we enjoy each others company so much.
This weekend turned out to be a "Valentine Weekend", for me.

My Pandora bracelet was filled, so Hubby surprised me with a necklace!

I love the charms he picked!
Then we went to dinner in Boston, hit Barnes and Noble...Love my Books!...
My Sister took me out to a wonderful restaurant for Breakfast,
and then my younger son, gave me chocolate and mini
Italian Pastries!
So nice to be thought of. Course with all this eating..
I froze my behind walking last nite with a friend.

Today I am at the store putting out MORE new items! I get so excited! Can't wait to share with all my customers. It has been so rewarding to see them come in for a gift, a birthday, ..... and find something that fits the bill! What could be better than to hear them say: "I KNEW I would find something here.

HAS IT BEEN THAT LONG?

Wow, Just looked and realized how much time has passed. The end of the year and Christmas are such a busy time for a shopkeeper.

As soon as Xmas is over, if you are staying open year round, (which not everyone does) you immediately have to re-order, freshen the store, bring in new goods and ideas, and the time flies!

That is what I have been up to, and I am going to post new pictures and products here, as soon as I get a chance. There are some great new linens, and textiles, and I am getting a nice line of candles in.

I tried another brand that I loved, but my "Primitive Peeps" kept telling me...GO BACK TO YOUR PRIMITIVE CANDLES!...I did! Pictures soon! They are so nice looking and great to decorate with.

So...I will be back soon with some new ideas, decorating and products...Please check back,

FIRST SNOW! Isn’t it exciting…PROOF that life goes on, and we are not in control, but in a good way.
Gentle falling snow, in season, preparing us for the Holidays.

Speaking of which…I have been burning the midnight oil preparing for our OPEN HOUSE!
Wrapping, moving, decorating….it’s like a jigsaw puzzle figuring how to get it all to fit…and none is going out until NOV. 4TH!

In the SHOPKEEPERS WORLD… It is almost too late to order, so SHOP EARLY, as once it’s gone,
ITS’ GONE! We may not be able to get more.
DON’T WAIT, OR IT MAY BE TOO LATE!
So many times customers come in to get something they saw, and I can’t get it again.
On top of that, our Handcrafters finish up the year, and manufacturers close shop, so don’t be left out!

Country Essentials is also a part of the
NH OPEN DOORS weekend, which is featuring the Crafts, Shops and people of New Hampshire.
It is the same weekend as our Open House.
There are other shops here in Rochester Participating, so if you come down we can let you know where they are.

Whew…what a week of shipments!!!!! It all starts back in February, when we go to the shows to see what’s new.
Walk, think, look, browse, talk, and SHOP!

Then on to the Order Writing Exposition. More walking…networking, meeting handcrafters…and placing orders for Fall!

Well, boy…are the orders rolling in. Everything we laid the groundwork for is coming in daily this week.

September is Coming…Changes

Argh….How I hate to see that the calendar is moving on, and the next month is SEPTEMBER! Don’t get me wrong…I love the cozy feeling of fall, the feeling of new starts, schedules, refreshing cool air, fall foliage…BUT NOT SO SOON!

Where did the summer go? It finally got hot in July, and August has been a bust. Now we have just about a week and a half left, no matter how much I put my head in the sand.

I want long days….sitting by the pool napping and reading…..
Casual dress, easy dress, throw the hair in a clip, flip- flop days…

Well…with that in mind
the store hours will be changing….
I intend to be open more days in September.
Starting in September….

Fall items are coming in….I am slowly putting them out….

It's Not Supposed to be That Way......

Watching my boy try on a suit for a funeral of his young friend. Something I wish he did not have to do.
Torn between pride and telling him how HANDSOME he is, and
not daring to mention it, for fear of bringing back the sorrow.
What PAIN a mother goes thru!
My heart is breaking for him. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep….
where is he…when will he be home. Why can’t I FIX THIS?! Why is a beautiful, young, accomplished, focused girl no longer on this earth?
What happened? How do you achieve, honor society, every high school sport, 2 jobs, 796 friends at 19, and make this mistake? If your that driven, and participate in life so thoroughly, how are you capable of that one fatal mistake?

Can’t we turn back the clock, hold on and breath, and have her get up today?
I want her to see how much she is loved.
All the young boys in their dark suits looking so handsome, but for all the wrong reasons. Her Demise. Not a prom, not a wedding.

How surprised would she be to hear all the love. How guilty she would feel for the pain she “caused”.
I want her to be in our family room, with me worrying the house is not presentable, or that she didn’t want anything to eat.

But for ONE DAY…..ONE MOMENT, ONE HORRID DECISION, she would be with us.

Oh, to watch you child suffer. I hate to see my son
in such grief.
Please, Son... sleep, eat, can I see your smile again?
Thankfully, he will sleep, and eat and smile.
The young girl's poor parents live with the fact she will not.
I want to talk to her, tell her…See how you are loved?
Look how many…..Aren’t they cute?…Look at your
bereaved best friend…Whew…that was a close call.
Thank God that was just a dream!

But, it is not. It doesn’t seem possible, that car won’t pull up,
that smile won’t light up the room. That we all have to go on with out you.

May you rest in peace, may all your friends and loved ones find peace…..
You just never knew how much and how many loved you…….

And to all her friends and loved ones….
Please honor her and LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE…

Timely, and important. Really makes you think about
what we are losing, and who really determines what we
are offered for choices to read.

I was in a Corporate Management position with this
Company for many years, so it is especially bittersweet.

While with this company I worked with Oprah guests,
Dan Brown the author of The Davinci Code...sat with him,
talked to his wife...did Book Signings with him, while he was trying
to build his career! HA! Can you imagine?????

As stores die, so does book culture

THE LIQUIDATION of Borders Books, announced last week, is like the death of an unlikely friend - unlikely because Borders was itself implicated in the slow-motion degradation of the culture of the book.

The story began in 1971, when brothers Tom and Louis Borders, students at the University of Michigan, established a book shop in Ann Arbor. They were among the first to grasp the potential of digital technology, inventing software that revolutionized how inventories were tracked. Borders became a book-selling powerhouse. The company proved insufficiently nimble, though, when online ordering - via Amazon or the Barnes & Noble website - transformed the point of sale, and digital files - via Kindle, Nook, or iPad - replaced paper publication entirely. The technology that made Borders boom ultimately killed it.
But the whole saga of books across these decades is a cautionary tale of loss. Once, bookstores were not unlike churches. In cities and university towns, they were ubiquitous, and readers moved along the endless rows of shelves as if along communion rails. The book itself was sacred. If entering its sanctuary was an essentially solitary act, still there was a bracing solidarity between bookseller and buyers, and then among readers. The apostolic succession ran from writer to editor to publicist to critic to merchandiser to clerk to customer to everyone else who loved the book. Public conversation took off from “published” ideas. How easy to imagine the book-loving spell under which the Borders brothers fell at the start.
The massive expansion of which they were both cause and exemplar was good news. Suddenly, malls had book outlets, too - B. Dalton, Waldenbooks, Crown - and the literary culture was no longer limited to cities and college enclaves. Then came the big boxes - Borders and Barnes & Noble. Small towns and suburbs became reading centers, too. The megastores stocked bestsellers, but also deep inventories of classic literature. Their very ubiquity, though, and their volume-based capacity to discount, made the big stores mortal enemies of the old mainstay, now subtly denigrated as the “independent.”

The larger the chains’ market share became, the more power chains exercised over the whole publishing enterprise. Soon, the corporate buyers from Borders and Barnes & Noble were as influential in what was acquired by editors as the editors themselves. An industry that had thrived on a wild diversity of taste and a near-infinite supply of manuscripts, mostly published in relatively small print runs, became ever more uniform, and ever more closed to all but big-name authors and potential bestsellers. Profits once came, say, from 50,000 copies of Stephen King and 50,000 total copies of 10 other authors - authors like me, I should add. Now the money comes from 90,000 of King and 10,000 total of two others - with the other eight writers no longer able to get published. Without anyone quite understanding what was happening, the entire book culture was being gutted.

By the 1990s, the Borders brothers had been bought out, and the corporatizing of book selling was running at full bore. Independents were driven out of business everywhere. Publishers, too, went from being based on individual passions with local traditions to being international conglomerates defined by the bottom line - a mirror image of the retail side. The unforgiving dynamic of predatory capitalism had seized the book business by its throat.

The fate of Borders tells that story. The tragedy now is that, with the failure of the big boxes, which previously caused the failure of so many corner stores, not only will cities be left without bookstores; so will the rural and suburban malls that had embraced them. This is a massive cultural impoverishment.

Speculations abound concerning the deeper effects of screen technologies on a thoughtful inner life, and it is too soon to mourn the death of reading altogether. People love their e-books. The disappearance of the public book shelf, though, is not unrelated to the blatant new illiteracy that shows itself, at one end, in the shrinking number of published book reviews, and, at the other, in today’s shallow political discourse. Junk opinion replaces the astute analysis that only careful and well-edited authorship provides.

The business of Borders might be replaced online, but the web that matters most is intangibly of the spirit, and Borders was one of its master weavers. This is the death to mourn - and take warning from.

This wonderful weather has motivated my “Inner Gardner”.
Gosh I amazed myself! My beds needed some edging and defining..
So I designed a shape, and had my Dear Hubby shovel it out for me.

This plant is almost 3 Ft. Wide!

And…I borrowed a chainsaw and clipper and like Paul Bunyan…took down limbs, pruned, cut, topped off, and shaped all my bushes and trees!

I really like how it turned out.

Glorious Fourth

I am sitting in my living room, by the window with the front door open. It is so quiet here where I live. I can here cows “mooing” up at the barn, the robin is feeding her new born babies, and the chirping songs of all kinds of birds is filling the air.

I am sipping coffee and contemplating my day.
Off to the Shop this morning. I love to be there amongst all the pleasant décor, smelling the candles and potpourri. Waiting for the quest to come thru the door. Each special in his or her own way. Anticipating the smiles and comments, watching people browse our new offerings.

And of course, the BIG WEEKEND! The REAL Summer! If it’s not here now…it will never be.
Flowers, Swimming, Grilling, Family, Friends….Bring it on!

I was lucky…geographically….when I was born. As are most of you! We were born HERE, on American soil. Free! No dictator.
Free…to pursue our dreams. Safe.

Cheering death? The Cost?....Thoughtful readers, pause......Sharing a Story from a 9/11 Victim

The following is an essay from Kristnen Brietwiesser, from the Huffington Post.

When my husband was killed on the morning of 9/11, television stations around the world ran split-screen video. They showed the buildings still burning juxtaposed against young Arabs celebrating in the streets. That disturbing vision left me incredulous; it was forever emblazoned on my psyche.

Ten years later, now fully awake in the bright sunlight of the day, when I contemplate the definition of victory for our country when it comes to the death of Osama bin Laden, I can only think about the damage that has been done.

I think about the thousands of lives lost -- American, Afghani, Iraqi. I know firsthand the sorrow those families have felt. I ponder how the billions -- maybe trillions -- of dollars could have been better spent. I remain alarmed about the continued expansion of absolute Executive power in the name of fighting this seemingly ongoing and never-ending "war on terror." I worry about the further erosion of our constitutional rights. I wonder when our troops will ever be called home. I know all too well, that thousands of young American men and women soldiers will never have the opportunity to return home. And of course, I fear reprisal.

But more than anything, I cannot seem to remove the optics of the giddy, gleeful throngs of Americans who took to the streets celebrating in the early morning hours.

Forgive me, but I don't want to watch uncorked champagne spill onto hallowed ground where thousands were murdered in cold blood.

And I don't want to see any ugly blood stained sheets as proof of death or justice.

Nor do I want to think about bullet-ridden corpses being dumped into the sea.

And it breaks my heart to witness young Americans cheer any death -- even the death of a horrible, evil, murderous person -- like it is some raucous tailgate party on a college campus.

Why are we not somber?

Where is the deeper, more meaningful reflection?

Haven't we learned any lessons in ten years? Paid any attention along the way? Gained any valuable wisdom? Are we really better off?
Can it ever be a true victory when so many don't even seem to comprehend the magnitude of what has been lost along the way? Or even what the future might hold?

Was it all worth it?
As my phone rings and the media looks toward me to give them their trite, warm soundbite of closure and elation, I have to be honest, today is not a day of celebration for me.

Mother Nature

Mother Nature is being very mean today! Yesterday there were birds singing...the sun was as bright as can be, snow was melting...

Today is 45 MPH wind gusts, power outages and very very cold.

Thank goodness I have my Country Shop to go to.

Right now I am unloading boxes and boxes of SPRING!

Bunnies, Florals, the cutest little candles...
and I can forget the weather. Plus it sure keeps me busy.

2 weeks till the store's Grand Re-Opening.

I am getting nervous. Just like riding a bike....

I can't wait to connect with my guests again!

The Winter made me do it! New Shop Opening!

Hello my friends! You know how I have been saying winter/January was getting to me?
Well.....I WAS enjoying my "retirement," all summer, fall, and thru December.
Then it hit me! I miss my creative edge, my Shop, my Guests, being surrounded by
Primitives, and warm cozy items for the home. The HUGE PRIMITIVE TRADESHOWS!

So......I DID IT! I am RE-OPENING! I found the cutest little shop,
out of the mall I was in, less than a mile from my home,
and I can make my own hours!
I spent last week in Pennsylvannia shopping for the store,
and loved every minute of it.

Right now, instead of sitting home freezing and cursing the snow...lol, I am with
a friend, setting up shop, and Playing with Primitives!
If anyone is in the area...our opening is
March 4, 5, 6 > 10 -4!

Is There a Longer Month Than January???

Is it me, or does January drag on FOREVER!
All the hustle and bustle leading up to Christmas, and then....Christmas is OVER.

Okay, I can deal with that...but in my mind then December is over..., but no
There is another week, and at the end of that week, another messed up work week/bank holiday.

Now what day is it? What month is it?
NOW it IS January.
Well, Christmas was only 2 weeks ago?, but yet it is January!
Now we are finally back to a normal schedule, and its only the 7th?.... of January!

Blizzard...lost work, messed up work week.
OOPS, another Blizzard.......

All the companies are doing their inventory, nothing is shipping, orders are piling up,
I am WAITING....for the second week in January for them to ship,
and my word, I check the date, and In my soul I am READY
for it to be the last of JANUARY, but ....okay my friends......
lets say it together
...it's still JANUARY!!!!
Is there some kind of time warp here? Eveything flies by, and you wait,
and celebrate, and organize come January,
but it never moves. Time Stops!!!!!
I must conclude this is the longes,t dreariest month.

February is the month of hope....

March is the month of transition to Spring
April is, well, APRIL!, and all the sunshine, and birds,
and life renewed.
I feel like I am in limbo.
Let the Tradeshows begin.....
Let the orders arrive....

Let JANUARY BE OVER!
Next year I am planning a vacation!

My house is in mourning today because the Patriots Lost! Oh My! Dare I say WHO CARES?
Not going to change my life any. Tell that to my husband and sons who really wait all week to be together and enjoy the game

Now I get my husband back and we can take our travels again!

WOW! I cannot believe where the time has gone! I find myself taking stock of the year and experiences and find this one to be a very special one, as it has been loaded with learning, change, and re-structuring what is important in life. SIMPLIFY!
Time, to “ Smell the Roses”, swimming, gardening, reading, visiting my Dad and Niece and Nephew.
Here I am eagerly looking FORWARD! With a strengthened resolve, and a fresh new attitude!
I am taking stock of my Blessings, and resolving to enjoy each and every day and moment.

First I want to say thanks to Tammy, From A Primitive Place for my new template.
How nice of her to create these and share them with us!

Well, the lull before the storm,…. of Christmas that is. That long weekend where the food is about gone, the company has left, the fall decor comes down. For me, it's a bit of a let down. Anyone else feel that way? I know good times are coming, but I also know fall in all its glory, and freshness, and crisp newness is leaving.

We went out with a group of friends the other nite. First we went out to eat at a great Italian restaurant. There were 8 of us. We all sat around, got caught up, and enjoyed a wonderful meal. Then off to the real reason we were together!!! Or should I say the highlight of the evening.

She has the beauty and voice of an ANGEL!
Of Course, Billy Currington wasn’t too shabby!

Don’t we know THAT!
We had GREAT seats, thanks to hubby
and his connections.

She is just the nicest person, beautiful voice,
she kept talking of being grateful for her blessings, and
her faith.

Hello Prim Friends!

I trust everyone with their warm hearts and kind souls enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with Friends and Family.
Or perhaps you enjoyed a peaceful, happy day!

Everything went smooth here.
The meal was delicious!

My Dad was unable to make the trip, so my Sister arranged for someone to watch him. We struggled over him not being here, and thought of bringing the meal to him, but my Sister’s little ones LOVE to come to Auntie’s and my Father INSISTED we go on with the show. He still is so thoughtful, and puts everyone ahead of him.
Here is a shot from a previous Thanksgiving, the last time my Dad was able to make it up.

This is the first time in FIFTEEN years, I have been able to be home the day after Thanksgiving! (Since I closed my shop)
IT IS WONDERFUL!
I feel great…no running in to the mall at 7 Am to open…no employee problems, no standing on my feet all day….
It is beyond me how people find it FUN? to run out of your house, to beat out strangers for PRICES, at 3 am???????

Thankful Thoughts/Shopping Pics!

In keeping with the spirit of the Season, and the Give Away I am hosting, I can tell you we have a wonderful group of Kindred Spirits in the Thankfulness Department. So many warm inspiring comments and EMAILS! I have heard some nice stories.

This morning I sit, at home, with a hot cup of coffee, while my husband goes out, commutes, and fights the good fight to provide for all of us.
For that I am thankful!
I went to Massachusetts this week to visit my Mom who is in a nursing home. She cried for her Mother. She didn’t recognize me. She asked me how “Dale” (Me) and (Gary), my husband was!
She grabbed my arm with the only part of her body that would work. (1 hand,) and just kissed and kissed it. I could not think about the sadness of it all. Terror and Pain clutched my heart!
But she is in a clean home, with WONDERFUL caretakers, and has not had even 1 bed sore, lying there incapacitated for 10 years!
For that I am thankful!
I saw my 80 year old Father, who I did not think would make it thru the summer. He is cared for by my Sister, and she does a superb job!
For that I am thankful!

I hit a couple shops in Massachusetts while I was there.
(I had to cheer myself up?!!)

We went to a beautiful Farm Stand, Calareso’s.
Oh…the produce! Wreaths, and Topiaries!
I got this for my outdoor Potting Bench.

Of course, a Pumpkin Roll, Blondies, and Pumpkin Whoopie Pies “fell in the bag”.
Got a delicious home made Chicken Pie too!

Found a big Prim Bowl……
Which goes nicely under my Prim Bench….

Oh, and the whimsical towel…

My Kitchen is more “Folk Art” style…

And a happy little Snowman Candle

I have a working fireplace, but it gets so dirty, and I don’t like the work and smell of wood. So….I put this Electric Stove in it!
It fits perfect, and with the flip of a switch, I can have atmosphere!
It does put out heat, and if there is a Nor’Easter, and we lose power, I will just pull it out, and use the Fireplace!

Well, that’s what I have been up to. How ‘bout YOU?

The Three Stages of “Country”

The longer I live…, and the longer I am in this business, the more I think I am on to something.
What I am talking about is what I call “The Three Stages of “Country”.

Now in the late 70’s, 80’s, there was a lot of Cutesy Country. Think Blue Bonnets on Geese. Teddy Bears. Now along comes the 90’s, and boy did County take off! If there could be Country Snobs….now they would show their colors. Out the window went those Teddy Bears and Wall Borders of Geese. They now called themselves”PRIMITIVE”. Yes, I know…there is a style more suited to the term Primitive, but that rather developed out of a separation of those who were running from Blue, Pink, and clutter. But basically, depending on how purist/snobby you are….Country/Primitive decorating covers it all.

Decorating with old bowls, textiles….covers both “styles”. Country really was the style that introduced all the wonderful choices we have.

Here is Stage One…..

You are newly married, you just got an apartment or your first home. There is not an abundance of money, and you want to separate yourself from your Mom, or the home you grew up in. Wow!….Back in the 80’s and 90’s for $10, $15, or $20 dollars you could buy a lot! You wanted something cutesy and heartwarming, excited to be different. So…A shelf, with a wreath, with a Teddy Bear, on a chair, with a candle, with a star, with a textile, and on and on. Each week you could add to your little display.

Mom says “What’s That?, and you proudly say…”Country!”. Heck your even making wreaths, and sewing. Very crafty!
Stage Two

You have been buying little doo-dads for years, the kids are older, you have a job, there is more money, and ….look out here is the 90”s! Shops are opening everywhere….Open Houses, Places to go, Celebrations….Maps and Girls night’s out…Saturday, fill the SUV with gas and a gang of friends….and each weekend you would hunt for your Country Treasures! It became an addiction. Now you are buying bigger pieces. A Primitive hutch, a wall cabinet for your collections, Each shop has a different craftsman who is making wonderful, rustic, and very different pieces than you grew up with. Striking, yet casual, you can’t hurt them for the wonderful distressing on the pieces!

Now Mom says “What’s That?, and you proudly say…”It’s Primitive!”! Enjoying the shocked look on the faces of those who don’t quite get PRIMITIVE. The more banged up, and old it looks the more you love it.

Stage Three

Okay….You are so over Stage One. You are sick of dusting and picking up the chair, the Teddy, the Garland, the candle, the light, and Gee…it looks like too many small things, So you stay with big things. Clear out and give away your “Stage One’s”, and move on to bigger and better. You wait for pieces that will stand the test of time. You no longer aimlessly drive….. every,…..single,…….weekend……spending. In fact, your next big buy your planning is for Granite Counters! Maybe new cabinets. The weekend trips stop. How much do you need after all? You have so much, and the money you save can pay for the new big purchase.

And you know what’s funny? Some of the larger pieces you have been buying look rather Colonial! Dare I say traditional?

Now Mom says “That furniture is beautiful! It reminds me of you Grandmothers!” And at that point you realize, that it all is one big Circle of Country.

The styles may differ, lifestyle and age may play into your decisions, but Country/Primitive/Colonial all beckons to our past, reinvents itself, and stands the test of time.

That is why it is so popular. You can make it your own. It is traditional, it is new, it brings the past to the present.

So go ahead and enjoy your decorating. Create your own reality by blending all the styles and faces of Country.

No matter what “Stage” your in!

OFFENSIVE OVER THE TOP COUNTRY!

Whaaaat? Did I hear that right? Who said that?!

I was watching HGTV. I saw this woman COMPLAINING that her work in the kitchen was so hard, and she just couldn't do it the way the kitchen was now. On and on she went, so of course I couldn't wait to see this horror of a kitchen.

NOT!
Colonial blue cabinets, Carol Endres Folk Art, Warren Kimble Border. PUHLEEEZE!

It was a wonderful kitchen!
And there she was moaning about how it was "spiritually" too hard for her to be in there,
and that is when the "Designer" said she couldn't wait to get RID OF
the "Offensive over the top Country".

I've written about this before in another post, "Primitive Predjudice". A true designer appreciates
all styles, and shouldn't be so insulting.
They took that kitchen's character, color, style, and art.....and made it an antiseptic sterile work room.
Plain white veneer looking cabinets, no color, no homey touches.
What a shame!
Of course the homeowner was in a sleeveless "little black dress" and couldn't
stop SCREAMING, over the improvement.
Who dresses like that mid day anyway...? Let's get real.
She probably doesn't even do her own cooking! Ha! LOL

I was just very dissappointed in hearing Country style talked about like that.I did however, see some beautiful Primitive Pictures over on the HGTV site.
How ironic!

My Window Makeover ~ Pictures!

I mentioned the new curtains we got in, and how I would share the pic’s of the one I picked out for my kitchen. I found one that I feel blends 2 styles together nicely.
The border is a classic now, by Carol Endres. Deep Country Primitive colors done in a Folk Art style.

The Curtain I chose, is more Colonial, classic Penny Style, which I think plays off the contrast in style, but the colors match perfect!

New Prim Furniture Pictures

Well did everyone have a nice Easter? I heard from several who enjoyed my little challenge for Family Easter Dinner. Thank you for all your nice emails. I hope you picked a nice little jar or tin to remember your day from. This works great for so many other holidays and special occasions as well. Graduations, birthdays, weddings. Who doesn’t want a piece of “yesterday”?

We got in our New Furniture and it is Beautiful!

Top quality, unique, useful, and all at a great price.

That is something we Country Primitive Shops have over the large furniture stores. They do not have the connections and artists, and community to carry some of the very unusual furniture found in our types of stores.

In fact, in some cases its hard to find furniture that is not veneer, plastic, and glued, even when they have the higher price! I guess we will just keep that our little secret of why people enjoy the
Country Primitive Shops.

Of course there is a lot more, but you get the idea. We all get excited when new things come in.

The weather here is beautiful! After all that flooding, here comes the sun! Guess they are predicting a big season for mosquitoes, and no see-ums! Yuk! Thankfully I have a screened in porch.

Country Life & Country Furniture!

to a beautiful farm, and I cherish it.

Well, yesterday, after coming back from grocery shopping,
here was the farmer, trying to “break” his little cow.
2 words: HOW ADORABLE! STOP THE CAR! I yelled!,
My husband’s head was spinning trying to figure what happened.
Out I ran, (and that ain’t easy…) to get this picture.

How cute!

This man has the sweetest face, just so happy
looking at his little animal.
Both such hardworking people in their 70’s,
still carrying on a life others abandoned.

And off they went. Trying to get him to walk.

In other news…we have some great new furniture
coming in. One shipment is due this week, we
picked up a couple more pieces from our builder,
and then in April, we have more coming in.

Lazy Sunday~ Childhood Memories

The sun has that look to it, the feel that Spring is just around the corner. As I sit in my chair in the living room, I look at how the angle of the sun is changing. The neighborhood boys are out playing street hockey, they must feel the winds of change too.

Slapping hockey sticks, happy shouts of boys, birdsong, and puddles. Coming out the other side of winter is like a big sigh....of relief. No matter how joyous winter can be, it has more than it's share of trying moments, and the change of warmth and light, and longer days brings a little more energy and hope.

The messy mud, the puddles, the melting snow, the first warmish day you can go outside. Does anything really change all that much? 10, 30 or 40 years later, thankfully, the simple things in life are still the same.

There is some comfort in that. The world does go on..

The boys childhood Sunday, is so much like any one of my childhood Sundays, supper with family, red cheeks, memories of a great day, then a warm bed to get ready for next day of school. And here from my vantage point, altho they don't know it, I am sharing my Sunday with them, and they with me. Time travel from the armchair!

Cadbury Eggs are out! Yippee! Another sign of Spring!

So of course, I ask, buy.

Then comes.."What are you going to do with that?" But he never stops me,and then lugs it all over creation, and in the end, he likes whatever I come up with.

Grateful

I am one of the luckiest people! Just back from my trip in PA, looking forward to our 6th year! at this location, I am so appreciative of what I have. Each day I get to go to my own Shoppe, and indulge my senses in all kinds of wonderful things!
You know how we all love decorating, Primitives, Early Home accents,…..each day, I immerse myself in it, and meet and chat with like minded people!

A little re-arranging here, a cup of coffee there, selling and wrapping up wonderful things...….

It’s like Christmas here opening up all the orders, and items we brought back, listening to the happy comments from customers is so rewarding.
My husband is so supportive. He works hard at his job, commutes everyday, and still gives me 100% at the Shoppe! He was hanging off ladders, nailing, loading, lifting…and boy that was AFTER the workout in Philly! I could not do it without him.

And for any of my customers who may read this, I want to say Thank You!, I couldn’t do it with out you either!!! Thanks for being a part of my day, and supporting a local family owned shop. Your response to our new Prims already shows me I am on the right track choosing things that make you happy to shop here.
I love the moments, laughs and talks we share.

Thanksgiving Past….

For one quick moment, I was
transported in time to my parents’
living room. I could feel the warmth,
which I know was love, from that day,
contrasted with the icy dangerous drive,
howling winds, and snow. I felt so sheltered
then, as if nothing could
truly hurt us: our family, bonded
together that day by love, and the
shelter of our home against the outside.

Voices, laughter, sharing stories and food.
Enjoying a window of time where Parents,
Aunts, and Grandparents were still healthy and alive.
Even back then, I closed my eyes and
tried to sear that memory onto my heart. I didn't
know then that time was the biggest thief,
also the cruelest, and you could not keep it
from creeping in under your door. and stealing
what matters most to you...little by little.

I wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then.

So...the moral of the story is to live each day to
the fullest and be thankful for each phone call,
letter, email and interruptions form loved ones
and friends.

Eat the pie, take pictures, and hug! It's all we can do.

Talking to people lately, most everyone can not believe Thanksgiving, and therefore, Christmas is just around the corner. Shocked are they, that the Christmas decor is out. Pressured, that next week is Thanksgiving. “No, seriously", someone said to me, urgently trying to convey they REALLY thought…
”it feels like it was last month, a week, a couple months,…

Why is that? How can it be that we are all nodding our heads, and saying we can’t believe its so early? From a security guard in a mall, to a bank teller, to a construction worker? Too many different jobs, can’t be the nature of the work.
Here is my 2 cents…In today’s world there are so many distractions. Cell phone, texting, computers, email, jobs, commuting, …we are constantly bombarded, interrupted, and just not allowed to live in the moment. Something is ringing, beeping, talking, forcing us to be taken away from our own thoughts. We don’t see the day. We are too busy. Next thing you know, months have gone by. And that is where Country Comforts come in.

Scenes from New England

Yesterday was a wonderful fall day for a drive. So, I went down an old country road, and saw beautiful foliage.

And down that country road, I found some delightful old barns.
Some looking like plain work horses. Nothing fancy, but sturdy and serving the families well without being all prettied up.

Others beautiful in the fact they were still being used as they have been for generations. Seeing the hay being put away. Comfort to see some things haven’t changed.

Here is one that is just so beautiful! It has been in the family for years and years.

This is the home of the people who own the farm in the picture above.
What is better than Fall Foliage, Country Roads, and Old Barns?

Then I went home and planted some Chrysanthemums. Along with some decorative Kale. I love the bright colors and the sturdiness of the plants. I enjoy seeing how long the Kale lasts before the snow. It is like a contest with nature. No matter how cold, it keeps on going and growing, ‘till the snow flies.

So that is how I spent my day…Now back to the store…LOADS of new merchandise, and gearing up for the ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE!

Small Town Life In the Country

Sometimes it is so easy to get caught up in all that is wrong. At work, at home, in the world. Times are changing. Life is going fast. Bad news, grim future? if you watch the news. But yesterday, I had a reawakening of the small pleasures in life, and that if we slow down to listen, we may see an abundance of things to be grateful for.

Living in New England. The pleasures of the changing seasons. Watching the Countryside change. Daily waves of new color and landscapes. The freshness and cool air of the morning. The warmth of mid day. The gentle closing of the evening.

New bird calls. Not the urgent noise of Spring birds, fighting for territories, building nests and new life, but rather the steady, routine of Geese, Blue Jays and Crows.

Speaking of Seasons, and Country Life…….

State Fairs.

Good for the soul. No matter how hokey, there is still something to be said for everyone taking the time to visit a good Country Fair. The fact they still exist!
Look at this old Postcard. The entrance is still the same today! This is from here in Rochester, NH.

It’s nice how Fairs haven’t changed. Some things do stay the same, and there is comfort in that. Farm animals, Rides, Fried Dough, and some daredevils.

There is a whole subculture that goes with that, from the carnival workers themselves, to the Quilters, and 4-H’ers, the old Farmers, the Church’s Concession stand. Crafts, Games, and old timers. All made up of ordinary people: trying, living, keeping themselves busy, or volunteering, reaching out and helping.

I fell asleep last night listening to the roar of “Monster Trucks”.

I actually kind of liked it. It reminded me that I am lucky to live in a small enough town, in the Country that hosts a fair like that. Still.

Far enough away, yet close enough to hear. While I felt the cool breeze of the fall night, I was grateful for my small town life, and happy for all those people who were participating or enjoying an old-fashioned ritual. Restores your faith. In people. In life. Amen

Well, I have hung on as long as I could. There is now no denying Fall is officially here. I do love Fall, it’s just that Summer is so short in New England, and the rain really never stopped ‘till August!

But now the indoor delights begin! Cozy in our Country Homes, this really is the best time of the year for Candles, and Scents. Bowls of Potpourri! Change out your linens, add some whimsical Fall Figures to bring out the child in you.

As evening falls so much earlier, it is so nice to come home to a window framed with curtains, parted slightly to reveal an electric candle or accent light to welcome you. As you open your door, the scent of your bowls of Potpourri greet you. Add a string of small lights amongst your garlands, and inside your cupboards.

One of the BEST things I have done is load my house up with timers for the lights. I know, you think “I’ll just put them on.” But what a nice feeling when you come home, and it is dark out, and a few of your accent, primitive, or colonial lights is there to greet you. INSTANTLY, you home is “ready”, and your room looks its best accented with lighting. And it is cheering!

Time to nest! Enjoy all the pleasures of Fall, and make your home a Primitive Paradise!

Primitive Prejudice & Country Decorating

Now that I have your attention....what's up with HGTV? What do they have against Country decorating?

I watched one of the designers the other nite, who talked about "clearing out all this Country". She took away a cute Prim wagon from a front stoop, pulled down the Country flag, removed a beautiful highback bench, and complained about the "little country clutter". It happens quite often on that show. Dissappointing. Then my eyes sweep over my own rooms and I think...Is that what I am? I prefer to think I decorate with things that warm up my home. I agree there is always room for change, and yes, even Country/Primitive has trends. But no way, will you find my home dressed in the Mirrors and Contemporary look they seem to show so much.

To me, they took the personality away of the house. The things that say "Welcome". What's wrong with the whimsical Folk Art that makes you smile?

A flag to greet you; and the uniqueness of a Birdhouse or Wagon on your front step. I am afraid the designers' view of Country is the same as alot of people. They lump Country into something that may not be "Country", or is an outdated trend. You still have to stay fresh even within the style you like! Too bad she didn't show how to display Country Style in a new way, or with the "tweaking" we all do, or show some new colors.

I know every once in a while it is good to look at your home with fresh eyes.

Move a cupboard.

Try some new curtains.Change the paint.

Too many small items? Make a bold statement with a huge Star, or Shelf, then accent that with a pair of Primitive Sconces.

Hang a beautiful Quilt.
Sometimes that looks neater than draped over a chair. There are so many ways to keep your Country style, without being dated or cluttered. Sometimes I hear people walk in the store and whisper to their friend..."I'm not into Country". What's Primitive?

Usually as they start to look around, the next thing you know they are picking up this,... then that,... remarking about "how cute this is", ect. They just need to look at the items without pre-judging what they are because of a label of Primitive, or Country.

Just look at the items as beautiful touches for your home. Part of the charm of Primitive or Country is the connection and warmth some of these items bring from our past. Things our ancestors lived with daily. Wall candle holders, Fly Screens, Spice Boxes, Iron, Pottery. Nostalgic comfort. I like that. Don't you?

A Daughters Lament on Mothers Day

She’s gone. Been gone now for 9 years, and it took every last day of all those years for me to realize it. Oh technically she is alive, but my mother is gone.
My mother suffered a stroke those years ago, and for each day since, I have held on to the hope, that she would come back. Maybe with a limp, a slur, a walker. But surely the day would come when she would thankfully, one day again be in my home. The kids would be playing games, my father would be sleeping in the recliner, and my mother and I would be discussing how AWFUL it was. I would get to tell her how much she scared me. How sad and frightened I was. How much I appreciate this second chance.
But we never got that “second chance”. From the day they took her out of her home of 30 years, she never went back. Not to collect things, not to try rehabilitation, not even to contemplate a dire diagnosis. One day she was cooking, laughing, taking the tags off towels she happily bought from Walmart, when fate came and took it all away.
But she’s alive, I thought?, you said. Well, technically. She is in her body, cruelly trapped. Unable to feed herself, use the bathroom, talk sense, or enjoy anything like a life. Gone are the Holidays, Thanksgiving preparations, a cup of coffee with a friend. She was admitted as a pretty, tanned blonde: almost a wise-ass, and is now a child, with white hair, and a sunken face, who talks sad gibberish.
Most people in her situation survive in a nursing home for 2 years. The longevity is a testament to the wonderful care she has received. It is also been a curse for her, and a living hell for those who love her. Her caregivers have gone back to college, had children, become supervisors, gotten raises and promotions. That’s how long it has been, and nothing has changed.
Well, I get it now. “My mother” is gone. She is not coming back, and we will not have that conversation about how we each suffered. I have to go on without her. She has to exist. Now there is no relief, until the day she “escapes” through death, that prison, whose walls hold my mother tighter that any convict has ever known.

Books, Country, and Warren Kimble

I love books! Reading them, buying them, collecting them, displaying them, and immersing myself in them. I feel comforted when they surround me, so you will find them in my home on my nightstand, in a cozy corner shelf, on the mantel or desk.

This book has the mustard and yellow of my cabinet which is burgandy and mustard, and the book is "Is there a Doctor in the Barn?" So its nestled between my barns.

Have you ever thought of decorating with them? Some of the older books have great covers, and art. Some colors just work perfect in a setting or in your room. They actually sell books by color to interior designers who buy them just because the colors are correct for their design, and they buy them by the grouping, not the title or content.

Speaking of nice books we all know the inspiration we get from our decorating books. I have one on Warren Kimble that I keep out because of the cover and colors.
But see that little picture frame? Guess what? Its Warren Kimble's autograph to ME!
My husband works in a well-known men's apparel shop. One day, in came a gentleman who my husband took care of. As he paid for his purchase, hubby said to the man, "You know, you have a very famous name!" "My wife just loves Warren Kimble." LOL of course you know the rest....It was Warren Kimble!, who got quite the chuckle out of my husband. He asked my name and was nice enough to address it to me, and sign it. Now it is displayed right near his book. I am so happy with it!

Country Primitive Decorating Today

2009 promises to be a year of big change. One of those things that has been quietly changing is Country Decorating. Style changes so slowly, it is sometimes a few years before it hits you. Something you once loved, or a style that was everywhere, no longer holds that same appeal. When it is happening, you barely notice, and then one day, click. The spark is gone.
Think back to the early 80’s. Remember dark heavy, florals, with pewter and tankards? Or, there was the other extreme, blue kerchief’s, ducks, and lace. Today, I can look at some things that were so hot, just 5 years ago, and can see the change emerging now.
Today’s country is not necessarily layers and layers. Its not Teddy Bears and lace. In fact, many people that don’t visit some of our country shops would be surprised if they stepped inside. They are missing out.
They would see some things that are just plain beautiful! Take away the name of the “style” and look at the home accents for what they are. Not for what style they are labeled. A rose by any other name is still a rose. Well a nice country shop can have things in it, that are beautiful because of how they look, not what the name is.
A good country piece, be it a linen, quilt, or country cupboard, fits in any style décor as a wonderful accent.
Here is another change: people are decorating mindful of our environment, utilizing wonderful colors inspired from nature. A current trend is to “go green” and appreciate the earth. That translates to warm colors, soft green hues, and earth tones.
People are getting away from all dark colors in their country homes. Burgundy, Mustard and Black, long the classic standard, are no longer the exclusive colors of a country home. While years ago an entire house would be finished in the classic three, now they are being replaced, or used as accents in a home that has softer, lighter colors.
Primitive furniture is popular as an accent piece, but people are getting away from filling their entire house with it. They are looking for a more polished look that shows the craftsmanship. Don’t get me wrong, for some, primitive is and will always be their look. But, overall, I see a change, and even within the “primitive” look.
Collections of things are being displayed, but not spread all over. An example of that is rolling pins in a nice crock. Check out http://behindmyreddoor.blogspot.com/. Linda has a wonderful home with great decorating ideas without that "clutter"!
Many of my customers are sharing with me, that they are now, after say, that 5 year mark, re-painting. They are going softer, lighter, and more neutral.
That looks wonderful with a big black step-back cupboard you may already have. A soft sage green in place of the dark burgundy wall, is now completed and complimented with a burgundy shelf. A primitive style, rustic coffee table is removed for more space and room, and a more polished buffet/sofa table is used instead.
Cleaner, leaner, meaner. Pieces that truly call out to you, and can stand the test of time.
In our shop, we offer a large variety of all styles, so that you can make your own statement. I like to say we carry beautiful things for your home….”whether your Country, or not”!
So have fun with your decorating, and don’t be afraid to experiment with new, softer colors, and bring in new styles. Why limit yourself? County is comfort and welcoming, so do what makes you happy, and don’t worry about the rules!

Tis better to give than receive

Sometimes all the people vying for your attention and money this year, makes you jaded. You can start to become almost numb and blind. How many sad stories can you hear? How many pictures of food pantry’s or empty donation boxes for toys can you stand? Every register for every purchase asks you to donate. That is why I enjoy the Salvation Army’s Wish Tree. No one talks to you, no one tells you where and how to donate. The tree sits there, quietly reaching inside your heart with no words. So you wander over, and your eyes glance at all the hopes and dreams behind those stars. No eyes staring you down, no pressure of uncomfortable guilt-giving. You are left alone with your own thoughts as to whether to pick Female age 5, or Male age 3. So there I stood in JC Penney picking a soft Teal blanket for Female age 12. And I thought, what 12 year old girl would want only a blanket? And why? Is she cold? Does she not have a bed? Figured pajamas couldn’t hurt then too! Next another caught my eye. Male, age 16. No Madden ’09 $60 game for him, as some request, but a pair of socks. Socks?!! Well you got it, with a side of slippers! Simple requests, for real people in need. That’s my kind of giving.

Thanksgiving Thoughts

300 Early Bird Specials! Now is the time to buy an HD TV, How to shop the Black Friday specials! Open at 4 AM! Who cares?!

WHAT HAVE WE BECOME?

No wonder the economy is in the shape it is in. The gimme, have-to-have mentality. What happened to "Thanksgiving"? That is the traditional American Holiday, of not working, sitting amongst family and friends, sharing a wonderful meal. Appreciating and reflecting on your blessings & accomplishments, your "harvest".

Why on earth do we have to get up at 4am? For what? To spend money on things we don't really need? It is a shame. Do people think about the ripple effect of their NEEDING to shop at 4am? What about the retail workers, and their families. They can't enjoy their families because we NEED to shop at 4 am, or during Thanksgiving? How about their health and well-being? Some of those retail clerks are the hardest working people you would want to meet, who have so little say in their working conditions, rates of pay and working hours. Even police, fire, and doctors, are not expected to work the holidays, and hours of a retail worker. Retail clerks face the public every single day, and people can be hard and cruel.

We are now going into complacency. All of the sudden oil prices are down. I can hear the people saying: Oh...I'll keep the SUV, I'll get that Flat Screen TV, Whew ...we made it through. How about put some money away for a rainy day? Donate to the unfortunate. Fill the oil tank now, before prices go up again. This economy won't be fixed for a while. More layoffs may loom. I don't say this to be gloomy, but to make people appreciate what they have, slow down, and enjoy the little things in life.

Warm mittens: They really do make a difference. Easier to go out, and drive. Cooking a good meal at home. The joy of cooking it, eating, talking and being with family. A backyard Garden, the slow pace and reward of saving money and biting into that first warm tomato. I thought we might get back to appreciating basic things in life.

Well, I am wishing for you a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. I am intending to spend it with my Father, Sister, Her Husband, and two beautiful children, and of course my own husband and children. We will eat, hug, laugh, nap, and enjoy each other.

I Love a Rainy Night!

It rained last night. Not a boring, pesky rain. A snuggle up, listen to the wind, slapping the windows rain. I actually like it when it rains, and even more so, a good storm. Tonight is the remnants of Hanna. Ah the honesty of rain! It is what it is.

Oh what a treat to be so lucky with a dry safe home! The storm is an excuse to slow down, not go out, & enjoy the rhythm of the evening. As I curl up with a good book, I think how lucky I am, as my three "babies" are all home, safe, sleeping in their beds. I know the time is near when they will be at college, living away from home, and I won't be able to tip toe down the hall, and look in on them as they sleep. Old Farms

I love the "romance" of an old farmhouse. Who lived there? What were the struggles and dreams?

Old remnants of make-do gardens.

A rusty ford left as if someone parked one day, the family dwindled, and time marched on.

And still, ....planting that corn, like most of us order pizza! Without hesitation, or measuring effort against convenience because, ... thats what they do and have always done.

I love old farms, and the comfort that still, somewhere, a piece of the past is still with us.

The Road to My Farm

I do love the country life, and part of that is extended into where I chose to live. I wanted to be in the country, walk an old road, see green spaces, and the occasional deer, or as you have seen, a turkey! (That turkey shows up many a morning when I am having coffee. He must like the smell)

I can sit on my front porch, and gaze up at it! It is like a living landscape portrait. It changes every season, ...almost every day what with the sun, and the flowers and the clouds

Summer Service & Mission

I thought I would share this picture with you. Here is a group of young women that we at Country Essentials/ACountryshop.com helped sponsor. They traveled to Nicaragua on a mission for their church. Look at all the faith and hope in their faces! How refreshing to know there are still young people who are willing to sacrifice, to help the less fortunate, and truly "walk the talk". I am truly happy to be able to have been able to help them. God Bless them, aren't they beautiful? I think so...inside and out!

Life and Death in the country

Yesterday was a wonderful summer day, and we were all home. I treasure those Sundays. Per our routine we gathered our phone, books, coffee, and retreated to the deck. There my husband stood staring at our pool. In my best fishwife voice I kept yelling..."What are you doing?, What are you looking at?, till finally nosey me just had to look. There, was a.. a... a what? A poor bird floating like a leaf. Oh, it made me sick! How did he get there? Our first bird fatality. We have had a pool for years, and never had a bird land in the water. So my mind turns…did another bird fight him?, did he try to get a drink? Was he scared? If only we had gotten out there sooner, we might have saved him. Such is life in the country. We bailed him out and gave him a proper burial. Rest in peace little birdie.
